Emergent Improvisation is a unique process for understanding structures in all principles of organization applied across disciplines.

Emergent Improvisation relates the act of structuring to natural, complex systems and time-based artistic practice.

Emergent Improvisation uses research, education, and performance to understand the act of structuring in nature and art.

Emergent Improvisation:

Offerings

Lecture/Demonstrations

We offer lecture/demonstrations ranging from one to three hour sessions. These opportunities provide an overview of the principles that drive Emergent Improvisation, discussing the profound and ever-expanding connections between science and art. The understanding of these particular connections reveals the unexplored possibilities of organization and structure that uphold the process of improvisation as meaningful expression and an agency for change.

Panel Discussions

Panel discussions bring together practicing artists and scientists in various fields of study. Dialogue is centered around the underlying structuring principles found in complex systems and art-making processes.

Workshops

Workshops are offered for a full day or a weekend. We explore the basic and driving principles behind Emergent Improvisation and work to find ways of exposing these particular connections within the individual as well as within an ensemble. We begin to investigate the importance of embodiment as a vital underpinning of an improvisatory practice. We work to find a shared language amongst dancers and musicians in order to reveal powerful means of exchange and awareness. Workshops can be specifically geared towards the solo practice or the practice of emergent forms.

Residencies

Residencies range in length from one to two weeks. We work in depth and scope with all the components of Emergent Improvisation, defining and refining the practice of time-based movement and sound performance. With clarity and focus, we specifically examine the progression of work from a solo practice into various emergent forms of an ensemble, broadening and strengthening our vocabularies and awareness on both individual and ensemble levels. Emphasis is placed on taking the work further into the study of spontaneous composition for performance. Informal showings are a possibility to culminate the residency.

Performances/Commissions

We are available for performances and specific projects of interest. Details of the commitment will vary depending on the scope of the project.
