Emergent Improvisation is a unique process for understanding structures in all principles of organization applied across disciplines.

Emergent Improvisation relates the act of structuring to natural, complex systems and time-based artistic practice.

Emergent Improvisation uses research, education, and performance to understand the act of structuring in nature and art.

Emergent Improvisation:

Solo Practice

The Solo Practice is a dynamic process of exploring movement or sound as a way of selecting and building a kinetic or sonic philosophy and technical base of fundamentals that are unique to the individual. It is an open-ended practice of discovery and investigation that is 'of the moment.' In this way, the Solo Practice is focused on developing an emergent vocabulary, where one has a wide range of movement or sound choices to draw upon for expression. Advancement in Solo Practice is a nonlinear, nonhierarchical process involving four experiences:

Embodiment:

a process of centering the body into the present moment of attention and sensory perception through various awareness modalities of breath, focus, stillness/silence, and subtle movement or sound, attuning oneself to the innate intelligence and felt experiences of the body.

Development of a Physical/Sonic Vocabulary:

the articulation of physical energy through one's particular sound or movement history and memory. This process may include attention to the issues of physical technique, including balance, extension, vibration, detail, gesture, turns, falls, jumps, textures, and simple to complex phrasing.

Awareness of the Spatial Environment:

the relationship of one's internal compositional signals interacting with the external awareness of self and others present in the environment, bringing attention to spatial orientation and its boundaries, sound, light, temperature, image, energy, time, and context. A multidimensionality of focus occurs, where attention is placed on both an interior and exterior sense of time and space.

Focus on the Particular:

the narrowing and selection of material for compositional development and refinement with an attention to the particularities of specific movement or sound, exploring its dimensions and scale, edges and range, depth and scope through various dynamics.
